“It’s Elementary!” and Tweens

Join the fun beginning Wednesday, August 29!

What are the “It’s Elementary!” and Tweens Programs?

“It’s Elementary!” and Tweens are two elementary youth groups at Westminster Presbyterian Church that meet on Wednesday afternoons during the school year.  “It’s Elementary!” is for students in grades 1-3, and Tweens is for those in grades 4 and 5.  Students come right after school and have time for a little fun or to do homework.  Snack (peanut free) starts at 3:00 p.m., and programs begin at 3:10 p.m. and end at 4:30 p.m.  Associate Pastor Barbara Stoop, along with adult helpers, leads the programs each week.  Children are divided into small groups by grade to study the Bible, have a surprise activity, and have time for recreation.  Everyone is invited.

Come to the circular driveway on the Westminster Drive side of the building.  Enter through the double glass doors, and our greeter will help you get to the right place.  When parents pick you up, we will bring you out to the carpool line in that circular driveway.  Parents don’t even need to get out of the car!
Based on the Greenville County School schedule, if school is in, we will meet. If there is a vacation day (Thanksgiving week, spring break, etc.) or a snow day, we will not meet. In case of inclement weather during the school day, a church-wide email will be sent to notify parents and volunteers of any changes in schedule.
This year’s theme, The Prophets, will include a mixture of Bible learning, fun, and recreation.
At the end of the year, we will have fun seeing how much Bible knowledge we have learned.  To do this, we will divide into teams to answer questions at our annual Bible Bowl.  Trophies celebrate our achievements when results are announced at our amazing end-of-the-year Bible Carnival, a favorite part of our program.
During the school year, we may send home information about service projects that our groups are doing.  This is part of our curriculum in which we try to teach that sharing with others is a large part of what it means to be a follower of Jesus.
Remember all the times you stood up during a baptism at Westminster and promised to help teach the baby about our faith in Jesus Christ?  We need adults to be a part of one of the most exciting ministries at our church!  We need leaders and substitutes for our weekly programs to lead crafts or teach games.  Associate Pastor Barbara Stoop writes the lessons for each week and assembles the needed supplies.  Volunteers read an emailed lesson before arriving and then come on Wednesdays to help lead.  If you are a Westminster member and are interested in helping, contact Barbara at 864-232-2424.
Parents, please remind your child that they are invited into our church and are expected to be on good behavior and to follow some simple rules:

  • Respect others.
  • Listen when teachers speak.
  • Respect church property.
  • Keep hands and feet to yourself.
  • Always wear your name tag.
  • Stay in your area of the building.
  • Treat others as you would have them treat you.

Please review these rules with your child.  We try to deal with regular behavior problems but will contact parents if necessary.

There is no charge for “It’s Elementary!” and Tweens.  Church members support the programs with their offerings.  With snacks, prizes, supplies, end-of-the-year trophies, and the carnival, it costs around $4 per week per child (approximately $100 per child per year).  If you are a non-member and would like to make a donation, you may, but we welcome any child into the program and don’t want cost to keep anyone from participating.
Junior Choristers, for those in Grades 1 and 2, and Senior Choristers, for Grades 3-5, will also start on Wednesday, August 29, from 4:30-5:15 p.m.  Children can go to choir straight from “It’s Elementary!” and Tweens.  Parents will then pick up children at our 5:15 p.m. carpool in the circular driveway on Westminster Drive.

Children’s Choir

Grades 4K-5K

The Cherub Choir, developed for children in K4 and K5, exposes young voices to new sounds and experiences through music. Children sing in special Christmas and end-of-year programs. Cherubs meet in Room 207 from 3:30-4:00 beginning each October.

Grades 1st-5th

The Children’s Choir, which aims to teach our children the story of faith through music education, is split into two groups, Junior Choristers (1st and 2nd Grades) and Senior Choristers (3rd, 4th, and 5th Grades). Choirs develop basic music skills through singing, listening, and playing instruments. Both choirs have opportunities to lead the congregation in worship throughout the year. Choristers meet from 4:30-5:15pm on Wednesdays. Junior Choristers gather in Room 118, Seniors in the Fellowship Hall.

Parent volunteers are always needed. Please contact Katie Knauer for more information.
